My First Vape: What I Wish I Knew Before Vaping
My first vape was one of those moments of curiosity, where I wanted to see what all the hype was about. With all those people going from cigarettes to e-cigarettes, I thought it was time I tried it out. And if you are about to have your first vape of your life or are thinking of it, there is a lot more to know about it than you might think.
This beginner’s guide will take you through what the vaping process is, how it works, and what you should be expecting as a new vaper — did you know that by starting smart, safe, and informed, you actually stay all of these?
What Is Vaping? Understanding the Basics
Vaping refers to the inhalation of vapor resulting from the use of an electronic device, which is known as a vape or e-cigarette. Unlike smoking, where the tobacco is burned in order to make smoke, a vape heats a liquid (commonly known as e-liquid or vape juice) that turns to vapor upon inhalation. Some of the main parts of a vape device include: Key components of a vape device:- Battery: Powers the device.
- Atomizer/Coil: Heats the e-liquid.
- Tank/Pod: Holds the e-liquid.
- Mouthpiece: Where you inhale the vapor.
How Does Vape Juice Work? What’s Inside?
One of the things that I wish I knew before using my first vape is what is in vape juice. When you know the ingredients, you make better, safer choices. Common vape juice ingredients:- Propylene Glycol (PG): A thin liquid that has a significant throat hit as it is similar in nature to smoking.
- Vegetable Glycerin (VG): A thicker liquid that draws more vapor and smoother inhales.
- Nicotine: : May vary from 0mg(nicotine-free) to strong levels such as 50mg for heavy smokers.
- Flavorings: Food-quality additives that impart the vapor with taste – from fruit and mint to dessert and tobacco flavors.
Did you know? Other vape juices also come with other additives such as cooling agents or sweeteners. Always read labels and only shop for products from trusted, regulated brands to avoid harmful additives.
Choosing the Right Vape for Your First Time
So I didn’t know how many types of vapes there are until I bought the first one. Each one provides a different experience and thus, the choice of the right one can actually affect your first impression. Some of the vapes used by beginners: Popular types of vapes for beginners:- Disposable vapes: Easy to use, no setup is needed, filled with e-liquid.
- Pod systems: Compact and refillable or pre-filled pods and easy to maintain.
- Vape pens: Refillable cylindrical devices that have detachable coils.
- Use a disposable vape, if you are looking for something no-hassle.
- Select the nicotine strength compatible with your requirements (lower – for social tobacco use; higher – for completely giving up smoking).
- Choose the flavor you’ll like, fruity, menthol, or the basic tobacco flavor.
Vaping Etiquette: Important for Every User
One of the things that surprised me with my first vape was how many people would stare at it in public environments. Vaping etiquette is something of equal importance with what you’re vaping. Essential vaping etiquette:- Do not vape inside, unless it’s clearly allowed.
- Seek people’s permission before vaping in their presence.
- Pay attention to the non-vapers or people with a high sense of smell.
- Handle used pods and disposables properly. The dumping of e-cigarette trash is one of the major environmental problems.
Common Mistakes to Avoid with Your First Vape
Just like most beginners, there were a few unavoidable mistakes I made while trying my first vape. Below are the things to look out for:- Chain vaping: Excessive puffing may overheat the coil to produce a burnt taste and sore throat.
- Not priming the coil: Always wait a few minutes to let e-liquid seep into a new coil before it is used.
- Ignoring nicotine strength: Too strong may result in headaches, or nausea but too weak may not satisfy one's cravings.
- Skipping device maintenance: Cleaning creates longevity of devices, preventing frequent accumulation of residue.
Health and Safety Tips for First-Time Vapers
Although to some, vaping is said to be less dangerous than smoking, it is not risk-free. After my first vape, I looked into appropriate usage and appropriate safety procedures to prevent any risks. Safety tips for first-time vapers:- Buy from reputable brands. Unregulated cheap products can be harmful.
- Limit the amount of wattage to (recommended) levels so as not to overheat the device.
- Store vape juice in a secure place and out of the reach of children and pets.
- Know your limits. Start slowly in order not to experience dizziness or irritation.
