County Initiative Brings HALO Vape Sensors to Whitman High School
On April 3, 2025, Walt Whitman High School included HALO Smart Sensors under Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) holistic strategy to address vaping problems in their schools. This initiative is just one of the efforts MCPS has made to fight substance abuse in its middle and high schools.
In the entire school, sensors have been installed in various areas; these sensors can detect common vaping chemicals such as nicotine and formaldehyde. When such chemicals are detected in the air, the system notifies the officials of the schools immediately so that they can respond in time to stop any more violations. The funding for these sensors comes from Maryland’s settlement with Juul Labs, which contributed millions to the state’s efforts to curb teen vaping. The Montgomery County Council voted to allocate part of this funding to install vape detectors in local schools, including Whitman High.While a few students and faculty members are hopeful, most others appear to question if the sensors will really address the issue. “I’m hopeful that it will deter students from bringing vaping devices to school, but I don’t know how this rule will be sustainable over time,” one teacher said in the midst of mixed feelings among employees. https://youtu.be/VZCtnVwJOv0?si=JABQYhbHYj0wD1yy Freshman students have also expressed concerns about the sensors. Others claim that though these devices may make students a little bit more careful not to get caught vaping, they are not helpful in preventing the reasons why students are vaping somewhere else. This view highlights the challenge of regulating vaping behavior among teenage subjects, with peers’ influence, anxiety and availability being the most important factors.
After triggering the sensors, Principal Gregory Miller addressed the student body and warned them that any student caught in triggered sensor zones would be disciplined according to the school’s code of conduct.With continued monitoring of the devices, the inclusion of HALO vape sensors in the devices is a vital initiative to push school health and safety measures. It is still unknown whether such devices, in the long run, will actually help to reduce vaping and help solve other substance problems among teens.
