The San Antonio City Council has endorsed the new zoning regulations for vape and tobacco shops following an important policy change intended to safeguard minors and respond to increasing concerns about youth vaping. San Antonio has introduced huge vaping restrictions, including a citywide ban on vaping in public areas, effective January 1, 2025, and zoning regulations prohibiting new vape shops within 1,000 feet of schools and daycare centres. Notably, Councilman John Courage headed the push to create vape-free buffer zones around schools. Councilwoman Teri Castillo, chair of the Community Health Committee, has been pushing to add e-cigarettes to the city’s smoking ordinance.

Impact on Local Vape Businesses

The new restrictions are expected to affect several existing businesses operating near schools and daycare facilities. These shops can continue their operations on the same premises, but cannot increase their space and move to different places in the restricted zones.
Vape retailers in local areas have had conflicting responses to the policy. Though some applaud the push to curb underage vaping, other people have criticised the move as a threat to the economic future and the lack of room for business expansion.
“We understand the city’s intentions and respect public health priorities. However, we urge the council to consider fair business practices and involve retailers in future policy discussions,” said a San Antonio vape retail association spokesperson.

Part of a Growing National Movement

San Antonio’s choice makes it part of an ever-growing list of US cities that are adopting stricter zoning laws regarding vape and tobacco retailers. Similar policies have recently been implemented in cities like Los Angeles, Denver, and Atlanta as part of the national effort to stop underage vaping and control the availability of products in fragile communities.
